School Resource Officers (S.R.O)
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office and Rockdale County Public Schools have partnered to implement the School Resource Unit which entails the assignment of law enforcement officers to the middle and high schools as they provide law enforcement expertise and resources to assist school staff in maintaining to ensure that no student’s right to receive an education is hindered by violence or disruption.
School Resource Officers (S.R.O) are also responsible for providing instructional training to 5th and 6th graders through our C.H.A.M.P.S (deputies must be certified by the Georgia Sheriff’s Association) and GREAT programs.
SROs are not intended to act as school disciplinary, that responsibility lies solely on school administrators unless they have determined that the situation is in direct violation of Georgia law.
The Rockdale County Sheriff, Eric Levett (RCSO), and the Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Terry Oatts (RCPS) value the safety of the Rockdale County children. After several joint meetings, discussing the number of national school shootings, RCSO and RCPS decided to take a proactive measure. On August 1, 2022, Salem High School, and Heritage High School opened their doors with one additional Deputy assigned to protect the school grounds. This allotment allows for two deputies to provide safety and security to the children, parents, and staff of our local high schools. The children’s education is very important, as they are our future. Join RCSO and RCPS as we set the precedent for school safety and learning. The 2022-2023 school year will be one for the books.
